What Happens to Your Health When You’re Overweight?

What Happens to Your Health When You’re Overweight?

At Weston Medical Health & Wellness, we focus on helping our patients optimize their health and well-being.

One of the tools we use to assess health for our primary care and weight-loss patients is the  body mass index (BMI). Your BMI compares your weight to height and may help determine body fatness.

We also use BMI to differentiate between normal weight, overweight, and obesity. Though we provide specialized care for obesity, our weight-loss expert and medical director, Dr. Andrea Bretal, also specializes in improving health for our overweight patients.

We want you to know what happens to your health when you’re overweight.

When am I overweight?

From a medical point of view, you’re overweight if your BMI is greater than 25 and less than 30.

So, what is the BMI exactly? It’s a mathematical equation that compares your weight to your height. We use BMI to screen for body fatness, which is a health marker that increases risk of chronic disease.

For good health, we aim for a BMI that falls between 18.5 and 24.9. This is considered a healthy weight.

Overweight and health

Given the focus on obesity and health, you may not consider your higher-than-normal BMI a big health issue. But being overweight is a risk factor for many of the same chronic health conditions associated with obesity, including:

Your weight also affects your social and emotional well-being. People who are overweight are more likely to struggle with mental health conditions like depression.

Weight loss for better health

You may not be too concerned about your weight and health if you’re only a few pounds away from a healthy weight. But if you don’t pay attention, those extra 5 pounds can quickly turn into an extra 20 pounds.

You don’t need to obsess over your weight, but it’s important to develop healthy habits that make it easier for you to get to (and stay at) a healthy weight. Our digital weight-loss program is a lifestyle program that teaches you how to be healthy so you can lose the excess weight for good.

We customize your weight-loss program to match your weight goals and health needs. We also provide many tools to support your efforts, including customized diets and meal plans, a personalized workout program, and ongoing support and motivation.

If you’re overweight and already have weight-related health complications, we may add phentermine to your weight-loss plan. Phentermine is a prescription medication that suppresses hunger and helps you feel full longer.

Being overweight isn’t good for your body or your health. Let us help you attain and maintain a healthy weight.
